What does the Bible say about tithing and money?

Does Tithing Apply to New Testament Christians?

It was a good week to skip church a couple weeks ago: the tithing sermon!  Just kidding, of course, but it can certainly feel that way can’t it?

Tithing (giving 10% of your income to the local church) has become a debated issue in some church circles and theological circles.  New Testament (new covenant) Christians are not under the Old Testament (old covenant) law, so can churches teach tithing based on the Old Testament commands for it? The New York Daily News reports that 45% of people surveyed would like to skip Christmas because of the stress it brings…Here are 7 things these people need to know:

1. Realize that the TV commercials are lying to you.  Their job is to brainwash you into thinking you need something you don’t.  That if you buy this product (or someone buys it for you), you will be happy, complete, at peace, and satisfied.  Why do we often go broke at Christmas (and then stress about being broke)?  Because we believe these lies and buy what we think will be our Golden Ticket to bliss.

But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

What on earth does he mean by this?  As a pastor, I’m expected by many to have ‘the answer’ when it comes to biblical and theological questions.  The question of money is one that has been keeping me up at night recently and here’s why…
